The Training Visa is aimed for workplace-based training to help eligible applicants to:

• Gain registration/ licensing or,
• Enhance the Nominee’s skills or,
• Participate in capacity building overseas

Visa Application Process

​There are usually 3 stages to your Training Visa application.

1. Sponsorship application (this step is not necessary if the company wishing to sponsor you is already an approved temporary activity sponsor)

Who is the Training Visa for?
 

• Applicants who have recent qualifications and/or experience intending to take part in workplace-based training to enhance their skills in their current occupation, area of tertiary study or field of expertise
• Applicants who wish to participate in a professional development training programme in Australia
• Students who need to complete an internship as part of their qualification
• Applicants who are looking forward to gaining registration/licencing as part of their occupational requirements
• Temporary Visa holders in Australia may also apply if they need the visa for any of the above-mentioned purposes

Sponsorship - Who can sponsor you?

​Your sponsor must be one of the following:

• an organisation lawfully operating in Australia
• a government agency
• a foreign government agency

The sponsor must be directly providing the occupational training unless an exemption exists.

We are able to arrange your nomination from an approved sponsor provided you meet the requirement of the visa.

Application - Who can apply for the Training Visa?

To be eligible to apply for the Training Visa you must:

• be at least 18 years of age
• have an occupation on the list of eligible occupations for this visa type
• be sponsored by an approved temporary activities sponsor/ employer OR invited by a Commonwealth agency
• have functional English - e.g. IELTS overall 4.5 band
• genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily
• have adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia
• meet health and character requirements
• overseas qualification - This category enables students who are currently enrolled in a foreign educational institution and who are required to complete a period of practical training, research or observation to obtain their qualification, the opportunity to undertake up to six months structured workplace-based training in Australia.
• Occupational training to enhance skills in an eligible occupationThis type of occupational training is for people with recent and suitable experience in the nominated occupation, who are seeking to undertake a structured workplace-based training programme in relation to an occupation specified in the list of eligible skilled occupations. The candidate must have recent and suitable prior experience (this can include employment experience or study experience) that:
  • is the equivalent of at least 12 months full-time experience in the occupation
  • has occurred in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged.

Evidence of your financial capacity to support yourself and your family while you are in Australia, such as:

• • bank statements
  • a letter from your financial institution stating your financial position
  • employment contracts
  • documents showing allowances, accommodation and stipends from your sponsor while you are in Australia.
• If you are currently or were previously an AusAID or Foreign Affairs supported student: a copy of the letter of support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

If anyone included in the application has served in the armed forces of any country: certified copies of their military service record or discharge papers.

Evidence of adequate health insurance for you and your family members for the duration of your stay in Australia. If you are the chosen candidate we will provide you with quotes of the health insurance meeting this visa requirements.

Resume/CV

If registrations or licences are required for you to do the training: copies of registrations or licences.

Your Obligations

While you are in Australia, you and your family must:

• comply with Australian laws, including all the requirements and conditions of your visa
• leave Australia before your granted period of stay ends and your visa expires
• maintain adequate health insurance.

As an occupational trainee, you must:

• participate fully in the occupational training or professional development program you were nominated for (you cannot stop participating)
• not do any work, other than in relation to your approved training program
• not become unemployed, leave your training to work for someone else, or work for someone else in a second job
• not do any other activities that could affect your participation in the training program
• tell your sponsor if your personal circumstances change, such as if you cannot continue the training
• tell your sponsor if you have any concerns about the training program.
